Javelina! Have-uh-WHAT?
Gene K. Garrison
(Reviewer - Rebecca Brown)
2002 Xlibris
ISBN: 1401066615
Spiky-haired animals living in the Sonoran Desert look a lot like wild pigs.
Collared peccary is the formal name for these unusual critters -- Dicotyles tajacu is their botanical name & they look like a cross between a hedgehog & a pig.
Gene Garrison has taken some marvelous photos & accompanied them by simple & entertaining information about these desert denizen & their friends.
Amid the flowers of the American Southwest, we get glimpses of a delightful family of Javelinas -- you say their name like this: Have-uh-leena -- as they hunt & gather near the author's home. In fact, she designed her garden expressly to entice these elusive critters into her camera lens.
Javelina! Have-uh-WHAT? is a lively, lovely learning book -- Gene Garrison includes a Vocabulary & each page has a delightful pink background, setting off pictures & words very well.
All in all, Javelina! Have-uh-WHAT? is a good addition to your family's library, especially for the younger readers. It is also a necessity next time you're travelling around the American Southwest, especially at crepuscular times of day. If you're very still & very quiet you might just get to see & hear them!
Very well done!
